5 Out-of-the-Box Recruitment Ideas You Should be Using

Top talent is attracted by innovation and creativity. Besides that, the right candidate can sometimes be found in the most unexpected ways. So why not think a little bit out-of-the-box when it comes to recruitment?

“The secret of my success is that we have gone to exceptional lengths to hire the best people in the world.”

Steve Jobs is the author of this quote, which conveys a very simple, yet very important, idea: employees are a vital part of a company’s success. Without the employees’ ideas, motivations and fresh approaches, companies would not be able to positively evolve and grow in the way they operate. Hence, it's undoubtedly important to hire the right people, who will add value to the role they will perform and fit with the company's culture and values and vision. As a hiring manager, you know how hard this task can be.

Deciding which candidates to hire involves a lot of decisions and analysis that sometimes are hard to make. Posting a job opening, reading through large amounts of resumes and motivation letters and performing interviews are the standard activities performed to complete a recruitment process.

However, in the current days, these techniques might not be enough to hire and attract top talent. Multifaceted and holding more knowledge than ever, people are, nowadays, much more than a CV or a 20-minute interview, and that's why you, as a recruiter, should not restrict yourself to these techniques.

Top talent is attracted by innovation and creativity. Besides that, the right candidate can sometimes be found in the most unexpected ways. So why not think a little bit out-of-the-box when it comes to recruitment?

1- Leverage your Social Media Presence

You've probably heard of the term Social Recruiting. This term translates into using social media channels for recruitment purposes, and it can bring many advantages. Social media channels are the perfect way to showcase your employer branding, which will attract like-minded people who wish to be a part of it. Also, social recruiting is a great way of attracting passive candidates who might not be actively looking for a new opportunity but would be willing to accept a good offer. Post photos of your daily life at the office, showcase your current employees and allow your future candidates to see how life is going to be if they become part of your company!

2- Invest in University Recruiting

University recruiting is a great way to reach top talents before they even enter the job market! Even though recent graduates may not have a lot of work experience, they bring fresh new ideas into your company and can be perceived as "diamonds in a rough". Also, posting your job openings to university job boards is a great way to improve your company's employer branding among young people and to reach out to future candidates who might not have heard of your company before.

3- Reward Employee Referrals

Employee referrals have become a very important part of the recruitment process. According to CareerBuilder, 82% of employers rated employee referrals above all other sources for generating the best return on investment. Also, according to HR Technologist, referred candidates are 55% faster to hire, compared with employees sourced through career sites. Implementing a rewards program is a great way to motivate your employees to make use of referrals. This will increase your number of qualified candidates, speed up the recruitment process and give you more guarantees that you are recruiting the right candidate.

4- Adopt Data-Driven Recruitment

Even though this might be a foreign concept for many companies, data-driven recruitment can soon become the go-to method for recruiters all around the world. In a nutshell, data-driven recruitment refers to the act of digitally analyzing applicants data to improve recruitment processes. The creation of internal talent pools and performance KPI's are some examples of data-driven recruitment techniques. Numbers and data never lie. If you make use of this information to improve your recruitment processes, you are making sure that you increase your success rate in your hirings. Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) are usually a great way to gather relevant data for future use, giving you KPI's on the number of candidates per job, how long does it take to fill a position, among others.

5- Make Recruitment Videos

Bringing digital innovation into your recruitment process can be a great way to attract the right candidates. People are more open to visual stimulation when it's on a video format, so why not make a video talking about your new job openings? This will allow you to showcase your company culture in a more interesting way while showing your candidates that your company is embracing the changes brought by this digital age we are living in.

Think Out-of-the-Box

Bringing innovation into your recruitment process is the way to go when it comes to attracting and retaining the best candidates. As you can see there are a lot of techniques you can adopt to improve your recruitment process, and even though some of them might seem very simple, they will certainly make your job as a recruiter easier while giving the candidates a good first impression about your company.
